THE SWIM! Having logged many hours in the pool, a series of Olympic and one Half iron distance triathlons, I was still nervous about making it out of the water. I prepped my neck, wrists, ankles and "other" areas prone to chaffing with BodyGlide, donned my Aguasphere XP Multisport Wetsuit, Seal XP Amber goggles and replayed one of Eric's quotes in my head over and over..."Trust your training and you'll be fine..." The first 30 minutes were brutal. I now know what clothes feel like in a washing machine! But after a short 1hour and 23 minutes, I was out of the water!
THE BIKE! During the short 11 minutes after exiting the water, I donned my HoneyStinger Jersey, Spiuk XP Bike shorts, Coolmax Socks, Nexion Helmet, SlyPro sportglasses, cycling shoes and I was off for a hilly 112 in the rain. Remembering well how bad I ran after going too hard at Ironman Florida 70.3, I focused my mind on the heart rate and cadence strategy Eric and I worked on for the previous 12 months. I also strictly followed a carefully planned and timed hydration and nutrition regimine. My fuel choice was custom made, concetrated blend of Hammer Sustained Energy and HEED. I also used Hammer Raspberry gel, gatorade and a well timed 8oz serving of Ensure from my special needs bag. My patience and planning paid off. Besides being cold and wet (another story for another day), after 7 hours and 2 minutes in the saddle, I found myself in good physical and mental condition to take on the marathon leg!
THE RUN! The next 10 minutes after jumping off my bike consisted of changing into my Spiuk 2 Piece Inferno Tri-suit, strapping on my Fuel Belt Race Number Belt, a fresh pair of Spiuk Coolmax socks, my Nike's and giving a quick tug on my Yankz! I was finally out of T-2 and headed for what would turn out to be a very cold, windy and wet 5 hour marathon. Many times I had to focus my mind on those key words Eric said in the hours before the race, "Trust your training and you'll be fine..." As I clicked away the aid stations, I kept my focus on my pace, heart rate, how I felt and hydrated and ate as I had practiced all year in training.
THE FINISH! Finally...After a 1:23 swim, 10:54 T-1, 7:02 bike, 9:35 T-2 and a 5:06 run, I heard those sweet words, "Troy Spier...You are an Ironman!!!" I owe all of my success to the support of my Family, Coaching from Eric Orton and all of the quality products from Aquasphere, Spiuk, Hammer Nutrition, Fuel Belt, Kurt Kinetic, Total Immersion, TriathlonBag.com (Zeus), BodyGlide, Yankz, RaceReady apparel and BIO Response to name a few. As a famous commercial once said, "I'm not only the owner, I'm a client too..."
